The biodiversity (or biologic diversity) is the variety of the living world, within nature.

The term was used for the first time by the entomologist E.O. Wilson in 1986, during the publication of the report of the first american forum on biological diversity (organized by the National Research Council). This word had been suggested to him by the NRC, because "biological diversity" was judged less effective in terms of communication.
