Do it yourself is opposed to having something done, built, repaired... A notion that is in itself an alternative way of life.

[edit] Do It Yourself (abbreviation DIY)
The first motive is saving money, ethical or green motivations are not always at the heart of the matter since you can, find DIY cars and even planes.
[edit] DIY enthusiasts
DIY can be found at two levels : :
- in our consumption society, plenty of kits are available to entice people into buying items for hobbies or leisure, this is obviously very far from any environmental concern whatsoever. Such activities do have an impact on the environment, only such enthusiasts will ignore this and simply pretend they save money while in fact they spend money on items they don't need.
- then there are crafty people who do care about nature and the environment, nothing to do with ready to use kits, such people are skilled and know about traditional old techniques. Such solutions are still used in developing countries where people wouldn't have the means to rely on ready-made expensive goods. Making a chair, lighting a fore without using matches, building a house of wood, of stone or with home-made bricks, this is real DIY! There still exist societies that rely on self-made goods, in Amazonia and Equatorial Africa, these people make their own earthenware, cutlery, thread, needles, baskets, bridges....
[edit] In music
DIY in music implies groups take charge of all the aspects to produce, distribute and advertize for their CDs by themselves, this saves them money and they can show they're not dependant on professionals. Yet there are limits as the material that is needed will still have an impact and this remains an activity that is typical of our consumption society.
[edit] Other fields
The idea of DIY can be applied to any filed, even cooking : a DIY meal made with home grown vegetables, and so on.
Model making does indeed require skill and time but amounts to producing useless and polluting objects ; it's a hobby but cannot be said to be an environment-friendly activity. Replicas of ships, planes or whatnot are typical gizmos of the consumerism on which our system is based : consumption-pollution-waste.
