In order to better understand in what Ekopedia is an “encyclopedia”, here are some definitions.

An Encyclopedia is a comprehensive written compendium that contains information on all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Source

Technique is a method, often associated with a professional skill in craftsmanship. Technique ranges from manufacturing , maintenance, management, to recycling and even waste management, using methods resulting from scientific knowledge or simply from practical experience and craftsmanship.

Technique is often underestimated, but it is one of the touchstones of artisan and industrial know-how . It is the result of the achievements of humanity . Source

By alternative, we mean that we wish for change : changing the way we live, the way we consume. The objective is to improve our ways of living and respect man as well as nature and the environment.

Autonomy implies a range of skills enabling people manage their own lives by their own means, provide for their personal needs. This means accessible to all ; financially as well as intellectually.

• A minimum of financial means should be necessary to carry out the various techniques.
• Privilege the use of natural resources (renewable) or second-hand materials .
• Possibility of doing things with few tools.
• When we say intellectually accessible, we mean we aim at sharing knowledge.

When we say “practical encyclopedia dealing with alternative ways of life”, we mean to propose data and tips bearing on various topics :

• techniques: extending from manufacturing, to maintenance, management, recycling and even waste management,
• helping people be autonomous . And beyond these topics, Ekopedia must be a community sharing space so that a great number of people can learn, understand, and implement these techniques.
• ways of life to answer our basic needs.
• alternative : opting for such alternative modes implies full respect of man, nature and the environment.

Fore and foremost, the Ekopedia project is meant as a collaborative workplace where anyone who wishes to (and can) has an opportunity to get information and to share knowledge.

We wish this space to provide practical information for the building of an alternative social way of living. Contrary to general encyclopedias, Ekopedia aims at giving people the means to put these alternative ways of life into practice. With time and experience, we may wish to add more objectives.
