Ekopedia:Tips/October 2010
From Ekopedia
Eating seasonal fruits and vegetables means eating local products.
Consuming local products is a key aspect of sustainability. Sustainable development implies 3 basic notions :
- The environment : less transports (food miles), so less pollution ; less chemicals for the transportation of the products that are grown in the soil and not in greenhouses, so less energy.
- Social relations : develop a tight link between producer and consumer.
- Economy : develop the local economy and the local markets where producers can sell their seasonal products.
Thus some people think we can get all we need from a nutritional point of view with the products near at hand. Our needs vary according to the season and the local seasonal products that are available at every season answer our nutrition needs.
