[edit] Projects

Hello, maybe should we add a table referring to the projects. I especially thought of starting the portals, but it's huge work. Pneukal (Username : PN-EU) blabla 04:01, 2 March 2008 (EST)

[edit] wiki collaboration

http://doodle.ch/8pvtwr2pp82m794y (To indicate your availabilities)

Hi everybody,

As you might know I am working besides my studies to promote collaboration between wiki that works for sustainability and green causes.

I start with Ekopedia, got in contact with Green Wikia, Appropedia and many others... A short list here show some of them... http://www.appropedia.org/Site_list_for_Sustainability_Wiki_Search

They don't always know each others... They are sometimes afraid to loose their identity in any kind of co-creation... However they are all motivated and passionated wishing to improve the world.

Through my studies I learn facilitation and a basis of my formation is learning by doing so what I propose to you is to try a Skype meeting to generate/co-create a better/some collaboration... Why a Skype meeting? Because where are all around the world and I don't have the resource to invite all of you at my apartment for a meeting. Skype seems a good way to collaborate and skip space issue. It will be a challenge (for me at least) to facilitate this Skype conference but I believe that it can be fruitful.

Here is a tools to find a date... I propose to do that end of August, before I will be farming in Belgium with my best friend. So just follow the link and let me know your availabilities.

http://doodle.ch/8pvtwr2pp82m794y

I would like also some feed(-back) forward... What do you think about this initiative? What would be your expectations from it? What are your position toward "your" wiki (time-role-...).

So hope to generate enthusiasm and get some reactions.

See you soon

I think it would be good to redirect people to Appropedia and make it more visible that the content is moving...

I actually don't really where is the process... But it is still in project, I guess.

[edit] Ekopedia joining forces with Appropedia

Hi - I'm with Appropedia and we've been talking with Jean-Luc & Olivier about working together to have a much greater impact, since our visions and methods are so similar.

One initial decision is that French pages on Appropedia are moved to Ekopedia (already done) and English pages on Ekopedia are moved to Appropedia. I plan to do this in early January. I'll also add a note to the top of each page here, pointing to the Appropedia page that it has moved to.

What this means is a single larger and more active community, and a larger and more visible library of information (i.e. more people will come across your work). I hope that's as positive and exciting for you as it is for us.

Sorry that we have not engaged more with all of you doing good work here - but I look forward to getting to know you in future! Comments/questions welcome (though I'll have to answer in January as I'm going away). --Chriswaterguy

Hello Chriswaterguy
I am one of the administrators of the French and English versions of Ekopedia. The English version is a little messy because of a recent problem of vandalism but Jean-Luc should tidy it soon.
Feel free to contact me if you need.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Neja 21:46, 23 December 2009 (EST)

Thanks, Neja. I'm just working out how to transfer the images easily, then I'm ready to make the move - I'm getting help within the week. Looking forward to the synergy! --Chriswaterguy 19:23, 12 January 2010 (EST)
Aren't all the pictures on the base? Which (I think) is another wiki... (The French, The English, The base, ... ). If I am right,I am therefore guessing that the image reference should point to the Ekopedia base with a possibility of transclusion or we should also "merge" the bases... Olivier C 06:37, 14 January 2010 (EST)
Is it possible to get Appropedia added to the interwiki map, so that Appropedia:Pagename links to http://www.appropedia.org/Pagename (as with wikihow:Pagename or Wikibooks:Pagename)? I see this is already done on the French Ekopedia. This is important as interwiki links do not use "nofollow", so that search engines can find the new address. Thanks. --Chriswaterguy 09:23, 13 January 2010 (EST)
I think I just did it... Is it right? I gave Define this as a local wiki and Allow interwiki transclusions... Does it sound good? Chris, I will be quiet busy but if I can do small thing please write on my user_talk page... I will try to keep up-to-date. Olivier C 06:13, 14 January 2010 (EST)
Actually I realise (assume) that Define as local means that links will be in the right colum... Which actually prevent from having a link in the text... So which to choose? or create to interwiki? Or what do I miss?
It's working: Appropedia:Test. Thank you! Sorry I've been so slow with this, but I think nothing is holding us up now. Update will come soon. --Chriswaterguy 03:20, 26 March 2010 (EDT)

[edit] It is about moving

I feel like stating again that the project is to move the whole content of Ekopedia English to Appropedia and then close this part of Ekopedia. We will so have an English version on Appropedia and a French version on Ekopedia... It will be sorted out later for the others languages... So contributors should as much as possible write on the Appropedia version when it is in English and on Ekopedia for French... Translation process should also occur between Appropedia and Ekopedia and not anymore between Eko fr and Eko en...

I think it would be important to set up good information for upcoming visitors... Like that they can contribute to the move and not get lost. Olivier C 06:37, 14 January 2010 (EST)

About the information, we could use MediaWiki:Sitenotice . Otherwise I would like to delete the vandalisms so that the site could be in order beforing moving the content.
Take care
Cécile

Which vandalism are you refering to? Maybe I can help. Olivier C 10:54, 27 January 2010 (EST)

The vandal I already told you, Ioakar, who added randomly hundreds of pages from Wikipedia. But thanks to Jean-Luc and Jecolo, the problem is solved.
Take care
Neja 12:55, 27 January 2010 (EST)

I was not sure it was that one... I did block a new one... And I am guessing he will come backwith a new user name... But Nuke extension is quiete powerfull... We should think at a way to connect that guy... Such energy should be canalyse... Anyway...User_talk:IoannisKaramitros et Special:DeletedContributions/IoannisKaramitros Olivier C 11:05, 5 February 2010 (EST)

Ready to go! Many distractions, I regret to say, but I have not forgotten. I've made a notice template, and now I'll cross-check all page names, to avoid clashes when importing to Appropedia.

Please, if you want to keep your contributions associated with your account, please create an account on on Appropedia with exactly the same name, and let me know by commenting here. Otherwise you'll be able to see your old contributions, but not so easily and not connected to your Appropedia account.

(The reason is that I will follow the practice of other wikis, to edit the exported XML file so the contributor names are shown as "username @ en.ekopedia," to avoid someone else hijacking the contributions, accidentally or purposely, by using the same username but on Appropedia. If you confirm that you control the same username on Appropedia, before the export, I will ensure that your contributions remain marked in the standard way.

I'll delay the final move a couple of days to let people register - perhaps someone could help by contacting the most active contributors and ask them to do this? --Chriswaterguy 17:47, 6 April 2010 (EDT)

[edit] Ioannis Karamitros - I give it a try

Hello everyone,

I had a chat with Ioannis (read below the copy) and I beleive he can contribute to Ekopedia... I will therefore reactivate his account and ask the community a second chance for him. If it would turn bad, I would take all responsibilities. But I actually believe that we will have Greek version pretty soon. Thank you Olivier C 03:23, 10 February 2010 (EST)

Ioannis I suggest you to start translating the main page and the welcome page and then the help one... So from here (Main page) to here here (Main page Greek) and then here (Welcome) to here here (Ekopedia:Welcome Greek) and here (Help) to here here (Help Greek)
Please Ioannis, do find a team or some friends to do the work with you... It will be more fun. Since you read French also go often to visit the French pages and get inspired... French is the original version and propably the most up-to-date. Good work, good luck

I am Ioannis Karamitros and you have blocked me from Ekopedia, can you please explain me the reason(s)? P.S. You can answer me in French. Thank you in advance.

2010/2/8 Olivier Chaput

Hello Ioannis,

I am glad you contact me cause I do like your energy and enthusiasm about helping us. However I had to block you cause like with the account of IoaKar you seemed to copy paste (probably with a robot) a lot of pages from Wikipedia. And Ekopedia is not about copying Wikipedia... Since you understand French I can recomment you to read this page... http://fr.ekopedia.org/Ekopedia:Wikipedia

So I blocked you to prevent that you spend your energy on the wrong task but I would be enlighted to support you in an other task... Like I believe, you wish to develop an Ekopedia in Greec. That would be answome.

For that purpose it is needed first to translate lots of "structural" page, like welcome messages and help and some many others... You can read more here http://fr.ekopedia.org/Bistro#Nouvelle_langue_.28r.C3.A9ponse.29 Maybe there some Greek wikipedia page could help...

If you are willing to work on that task, I would restore an account for you... The one you wish and advocat towards the others (who got a bit irritated by the repetitive copy paste) the great input you could bring for a Greek version.

So looking forward to read you and co-create together. Olivier C

2010/2/8 Ioannis Karamitros

Thank you for your feedback, but I am afraid I was not able to understand how I can add a new language, if you want and have time can you please tell me? Thank you in advance. You can also write in French.

On 8 February 2010 15:21, Ioannis Karamitros wrote:

I forgot to tell you that I do not use any robot just copy & paste the pages from Wikipedia.

010/2/8 Olivier Chaput

So I am not actually asking you to add a language but suggesting that I could do it if you help me with the translation. So like I said on the French village pump, you can translate the different pages and have them written on the English or French version. I would put them into the Greek structure when there are enough (a starting basis).

Does that make it more clear?

Yes and thanks you a lot :) Please inform me when you do. Thank you again.

[edit] Appropedia merge - steps

This merge has been dragging on - my fault for being distracted with other tasks, but it's also not a quick job. There is an existing active community here, and I want to respect that, do it carefully, and keep people engaged as far as possible.

So I've been planning all the steps, and would like to start with these:

  1. Have a note placed on the main page, and at MediaWiki:Sitenotice, telling of the merge, and pointing to Ekopedia:Joining forces with Appropedia. Could one of the admins please do this? For the date, so I suggest Thurs 8 July at 2am UTC, so perhaps this could be used: "The English language Ekopedia is joining forces with with Appropedia at 2am UTC on Thurs 8 July. Please join us there!"
  2. I will use my bot to place a note - {{Appropedia merge news}} - on every user's talk page.
  3. I have a bunch of commands to run when I actually do the move, so I'm preparing those.

I chose that date and time because I can be online, and so can our tech person (Jason Smithson). In the unlikely event that there's a change, I'll give warning, and add an update to the merger notice. Thanks for your patience! --Chriswaterguy 17:34, 29 June 2010 (EDT)

Will it still happen? Olivier C 12:01, 6 July 2010 (EDT)

[edit] Criteria for pages?

I've found a page or two in Category:Alternative medicine that I'm doubtful about, e.g.Crystal healing. A principle we've tried to follow on Appropedia is to be scientifically rigorous where possible - not in a very narrow sense, but at least requiring some kind of evidence and/or logical thinking. (It's also a matter of focus and scope - we've focused more on public health, rather than individual health.) We want to be supportive of the efforts people have made, but also guard the reliability of the information.

Then there are pages such as naturism - not really a problem, but I don't know how it relates to the project. On the other hand, this kind of site appeals to alternative lifestyle types of people, and there might be pages on specific communities that want to link to naturism.

Now, I want to be very inclusive. Appropedia's approach has been to be very tolerant, and if there's something a bit off-topic, we can often give it a place, until perhaps one day it finds a more suitable home on a different wiki (we have a {{transwiki}} tag for this purpose, and I notice there is a WikiHealth which could be somewhere to move certain kinds of personal health article.) What approach is the Ekopedia community comfortable with? --Chriswaterguy 17:54, 29 June 2010 (EDT)

I trust you will take the right decision, I would suggest to add as much as possible and let the community decide, correct or delete what they feel is not appropriate. Olivier C 12:01, 6 July 2010 (EDT)

[edit] End of Appropedia & Ekopedia Merge

Hello,

Here is the email I send this morning to Appropedia team. This email ends the projects merge that probably wouldn't have been a success.

Here his my email.

It has been more than two years that Olivier initiate discussions between our projects; Thanks to him!

But in spite of the fact that we had very good discussions in early 2009, the project, as describe on http://www.appropedia.org/Appropedia:Memorandum_of_Understanding/Ekopedia, have not really evolved yet.

Also, issues that we would have to address (http://www.appropedia.org/Appropedia:Ekopedia_partership_-_issues_to_address), have not either.

Also, we have a value issue: advertising. I am definitely opposed to it, and you do not close that door. For me, this point is more than major as it address ethics and values questions.

Furthermore, despite our discussions, our teams and majors contributors have not really discuss, or not even initiate a team merge. This is probably due to the language barrier (few Ekopedia contributors speak fluently English, and let alone Appropedia contributors that do speak a bit French)!

For all theses reasons, I now decide to close the merge process!

I have been very happy to know you, and I am still very interested to know you more. But sadly, I am now sure that a projects merge wont be possible, nor a success.

I am still very opened that you use our English contributions, but before thinking if we are going to close or not en.ekopedia.org, I would like to discuss with our team.

Its a pity that our merge process is not a success, but I have learn a lot during that time, and I'm sure that this decision is a very good choice for our projects, individually.

I would like to thanks you all for the time and effort you gave!

Regards, Jean-Luc

--HertzZ 10:16, 30 June 2010 (EDT)

Sorry that it has ended, but I look forward to finding ways to work together.
If it's relevant to the question of the English sites - the issue of advertising was a point of difference, but if people imagine distracting ads like on a commercial site (or ads for big wasteful cars on the hybrid cars page), then that's not the case. We don't have any plans for ads, but as Jean-Luc said, we don't have an agreement within the Appropedia Foundation to irrevocably close the door on advertising. If it were done, it would only be with great care in the choice of ads and how they are displayed. But my own desire is to find serious funding for Appropedia, so that we don't need to think about advertising.
Anyway, I know there is a community of great wiki people here, and we're also making interesting progress at Appropedia, so I hope that we ll will be working more closely, whatever form it takes. --Chriswaterguy 14:30, 9 July 2010 (EDT)

[edit] portail se divertir, version en

bonjour,

Leisure me convient :) --HertzZ 10:20, 8 September 2010 (EDT)
ok, je change et je vais voir si les redirections se font bien ; merci :-) --Wibil 10:54, 8 September 2010 (EDT)

hi!

I have a problem with this page : Utilisateur sérieux cannot be User serious : the adjective must come first! (pas grammatical)

Should we do as in Wikipedia and put something like Userbox serious?
