Opting for organic seasonal local food
| This article is part of the Food theme. Alimentation |
Opting for organic seasonal local food means getting back into contact with the people who produce our food, enjoying fresh and tasty products that are typical of a local area. It is also a means to encourage the local production of food instead of depending on food that is transported from faraway places. Thus food resources are fairly shared with the rest of the world.
Organic seasonal local food has much less impact on the environment as there are no food miles, no need to store or to use chemicals (pesticides or fertilizers). The quality of the soil will be restored as well as natural landscapes. The products we buy are suited to local traditions, they're available when at their best so we can enjoy them all the more!

[edit] Why should we opt for organic seasonal local food ?
- To enjoy healthy quality food,
- To boost the local economy, help out the farmers in the area and create jobs that make sense,
- To take part in the preservation of farmlands and of biodiversity,
- To reduce my ecological footprint (pesticides, transports),
- To contribute to the development of the diversity of local ways of life.
[edit] Is the cost an obstacle ?
The extra cost of organic food can be compensated :
- By prefering short food circuits,
- By buying the quantities we really need,
- By relying less on meat for proteins and more on legumes,
- By eating whole cereals that are richer.
[edit] Putting this into practice
[edit] Rediscover seasonal fruit and vegetables
Forget about strawberries in January! Prefer the products that are available at the farm nearby at the local market (or local food baskets) and think different : this is an alternative system for production and consumption. Farmers' markets work well : there is a close link between a farmer and the neighbouring population who will get a basketful of fresh products every week. This enables more farmers to settle and start small clean businesses that respect the environment.
[edit] Grow your own
We can easily grow some of our own food even in a small garden, an allotment, or create an urban garden on a terrace, a balcony or even on a window sill.
