Lights on...
Tux is the mascot of the Linux kernel. Linux is a free open source operating system, which implies developers from all over the world can contribute to the project because they have access to the code. Similarly, users can download any of the distributions that are available : Mandriva, Ubuntu, Suse and plenty others, even slackware versions and even choose beween desktop environments : GNOME, KDE, Xfce, LXDE... Not only is it free but it is sustainable : the files you saved 5 years ago will open just as fine in the latest applications.
Linux is more and more used in administrations to save the money for license fees, it is also a good option for charities that send digital equipment to developing countries. The system is user friendly and can help narrow the gap between the digital haves and have nots as the system as well as the regular updates are perfectly free of charge, contrary to proprietary systems or softwares.
