Bicycles
Compared to walking, riding a bike is much more efficient for the same effort and three to four times faster, even more with recumbent bicycles. Compared to cars, bikes are also more efficient in terms of energy for the same distance. Not only is it cheap but it doesn't pollute, no need for costly driveways either. It's good for one's health and easy to park.
As far as pollution is concerned, making bikes does have an environmental impact (fossil fuels and various pollutants). However, nothing to compare with the car industry. No pollution during its life time and easily recyclable afterwards.
Good to know : you can ride a bicycle even if you don't own one as more and more ciites have stations where you can rent one.
