Spinning is the act of transforming fibers in a long, hand-bent string with devices like a spinning wheel, a spindle and a distaff.

[edit] Hand spinning

It is done with a spindle or a spinning wheel. The fibers can be spun without having been washed or carded, c'est le filage en suint.

[edit] Different fibers

Anything that looks like hair can be spinned:

  • Vegetal fibers : linen, cotton, hemp, ramie, bamboo, nettle, soybeans
  • Animal fibers: wool, mohair (goat), angora (rabbit), alpaca, llama, camel, yak, cashmere (goat), silk, cat, dog, qiviut (musk ox), bison, opossum, cashmerino (goat)
  • Transformed fibers: viscose, milk proteins, tencel, glitz, ingeo (maize), nylon

And hair too, paper cut in thongs, raffia, plastic bags ...
